PORTABLE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT SAFETY
PAT Testing Responsibilities

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical equipment used at work to be maintained so it does not cause danger. The law does not require PAT testing by name or set a fixed testing interval.

The type and frequency of inspection and testing should be based on the equipment, how it is used and the environment in which it is used. Testing should be completed by someone competent to do the work.

Keeping an equipment register and test results can help show that electrical safety is being managed, although records are not legally required in every case.

TEST SCHEDULE
Risk-based - not automatically every year
Important: PAT testing does not replace routine user checks, maintenance or the need to remove unsafe equipment from use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PAT testing?

PAT testing checks electrical appliances and equipment to help make sure they are safe to use. It includes a visual inspection and, where appropriate, electrical safety tests.

Do landlords need PAT testing?

Landlords must make sure electrical equipment supplied with a property is safe. Private landlords are not generally required to arrange PAT testing by name, but inspection and testing can help demonstrate that provided appliances are being maintained safely. In England, additional equipment-testing duties apply to social landlords.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement in the UK?

The law does not require every appliance to receive a PAT test or an annual test. However, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical equipment used at work to be maintained so it does not cause danger. PAT testing can form part of this safety programme.

What electrical equipment needs PAT testing?

PAT testing should be carried out by a competent and qualified professional using appropriate testing equipment and procedures.

How often should PAT testing be carried out?

There is no fixed testing period for every appliance. The frequency should be based on the type of equipment, how often it is used, where it is used and how likely it is to become damaged.

What does PAT testing involve?

The tester checks the plug, cable, casing and other accessible parts for damage. Suitable electrical tests are then completed where required. You receive an itemised record showing the equipment checked and the results.

How much does PAT testing cost?

Our PAT testing starts from £59 plus VAT. The final price depends on the number and type of electrical items, the property location and whether you require testing at one or several sites. We confirm the price before booking.

Who can carry out PAT testing?

PAT testing should be completed by someone competent for the work. They must have the knowledge, training and equipment needed to perform the tests safely and understand the results. They do not always have to be a qualified electrician.
